President Obama’s sweeping health care law boosted spending in many areas of medical research including the creation of a new quasi-governmental agency – the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute – focused on personalized medicine. I take a look at the PCORI in the latest issue of Health Affairs. PCORI was given $3 billion to conduct comparative effectiveness research (meaning comparing 2 or more options for treatment and determining which works best for which person) and to boost patients’ engagement in research and their care.
